Boys of the Prairie began in the late 1980s as a Celtic duo with Frank Shopen (fiddle, cittern, mandolin) and Randy Brown (6- and 12-string guitar, mandocello, mandolin). The Boys were regular performers at the Topeka St. Patrick’s Day festivities of the 90s and 2000s. After an extended hiatus, the band returned in 2018 with Randy and Frank joined by Tony Silvestri on vocals, concertina and bodhrán, and Eric Ryan on flute and whistle. This new lineup has a unique Celtic style drawing from a wide breadth of influences from Ireland, Brittany and Scotland as well as the Midwestern prairies that are home to the band. They can usually be found on Sunday evenings at the Lawrence Irish Session at Henry’s Upstairs in Lawrence, Kansas.
